a Great Good Space

a Great Good Space

Coming to a POP-UP + Substack near you! Summer 2023

“a Great Good Space” — when 2 artist friends collaborate to turn an ongoing conversation into the real thing. This an active documentation of our process.

what is it?

A community art + design studio , run by professional artists and educators, that curates a space in between for our littlest learners to make, design, and create great good things.

A gathering space that enables art to grow.

Making space in between to pause and play everyday for you, for me, and everyone in between.

why is it?

We’ve charged ourselves to respond to and create third spaces, like these, for art education and creative communities both inside and outside the standard classroom. The goal is to cultivate spaces similar spaces for the Early Childhood learner that foster confidence in our natural creative curiosities. In turn, nurturing what art sincerely creates: relationships to our interactions, to our lived worlds”[that Maxine Greene promotes.]

how will it be?

Right now, it looks like Jeannine and I meeting weekly to put together a business plan, brand, and build out our visual identity [physical (zine, art kits) + digital platforms (Substack, website)]

By this Summer 2023, It will look like your local professional artist and art educator showed up to the local POP-event with everyday art materials, creative prompts, a place for you to sit and make great good things with yourself and your friends. Bring your kids too!

It’s free . It’s open. You don’t have to know how to draw.

Jeannine and I will be facilitating the experience and making great good things with everyone too.

We’ll also have:

  • printed copies of our first “Great Good Zine” available

  • At-Home Art Kits ready for you.

BRANDING

  • “a Great Good Space” is an art + design gathering space where creative curiosity and imagination are nurtured as everyday tools. A place where art is for everyone. A space to pause and play everyday.

Inherently, it is meant to be a thirdspace for Art Education and creative community. The very thing my Art + Design Education MA thesis centered around. The initial idea about a “third space for Art Education” came together for me during my graduate studies at RISD in the Teaching and Learning in Art + Design program. Here, the idea became a research paper, but afterward and since then I’ve wanted to find a way to transform this thirdspace from content to a real physical form.

I’ve built on this certainty since then and attempted to make this thirdspace happen, but something always has gotten in the way. Until, I brought the idea to one of my fellow artist friends, Jeannine. She had been thinking about the same sort of space with her own art and illustration business at the time. Everytime we saw each other, this creative thirdspace came up. What would it look like? How fun it could be? When are we making it a real thing? However, life continued to happen and the conversations lingered.

  • In it’s current form, it’s still an idea, but it’s starting to take real shape as I’m collaborating with a fellow creative friend of mine, Jeannine, to bring this thing to life.

At the moment, we are working on the visual identity of the brand, a business plan, alongside a physical and digital platform where we can connect and create with our audiences. This looks like creative workshops at POP-UP events and a Substack that will act as a subscriber-based newsletter/digital zine where we will share at-home art projects/creative prompts for both Early Childhood learners + caregivers.

We are hoping to be ready to take part in a local community POP-UP this Summer 2023.

At the pop-up, we will have an art workshop demo for all ages led by myself and Jeannine. Also, here, our first printed zine will be available in newspaper form to hand out to people as a little introduction. It will be full of illustrations and content that tell the story of “a Great Good Space” and where you can us next.

This will be our first opportunity to introduce ourselves and the idea to the public.

  • Our initial goal, right now is focused on solidifying a business plan and creating our visual identity.

When this is ready, we will start reaching out to local pop-up events and community creative spaces where we would like to do small pop-up creative workshops through “a Great Good Space”.

For now, this is a a pop-up venture and Substack zine. In the future, who knows. We dreamed it, now were making it, and I’m certain we will be able to grow it.

Follow along here for a look into our process as we explore, collaborate, and build our brand, our great good voice.
